If you’ve preordered my book, one thing you might’ve noticed is a discrepancy in the release date. While the University of Michigan Press said the book would ship on September 13, Amazon said October 5.
Some academic presses, as I understand it, don’t establish hard release dates many months in advance the way trade presses do. Since academic books typically don’t sell as many copies, there’s less incentive for the publisher to try to organize a marketing blitz around a single date.
I have good news: You’re not going to have to wait until September or October. My book, Discredited: The UNC Scandal and College Athletics’ Amateur Ideal will be released to all buyers (no matter where you order) on August 27!!!!
… than to buy Andy’s book
The pre-publication process of incorporating edits and copy edits has gone so smoothly that the press was able to move up the release date to coincide with the start of the college football season. This will give me opportunities to pitch op-eds/excerpts around the time that there will be elevated interest in the subject. But more on that in a future newsletter.
In the meantime, check out some of the early publicity for my book:
This story in The Daily Tar Heel, where I cut my journalism and UNC-watching teeth.
And I did this interview with the podcast companion to one of my favorite college sports newsletters, Extra Points. (If you’re interested in college sports I’d urge you to subscribe. It’s extremely smart.)
I’d recommend listening this interview if you’d like a little refresher on the UNC scandal in advance of reading my book.
Coming soon: I’ll take you behind the curtain on preorder sales and how proceeds work. Also, in another newsletter I’ll talk about how I plan on promoting the book as we get closer to the release date.
I’m also thinking about doing an open thread soon to take any questions you all have. Let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in!
