Andy's Still Writing Something
Or, things: notes to myself, movie reviews, fantasy baseball emails, and a word game.
When we last spoke I was fresh off finishing Discredited, the book whose creation I documented in this newsletter. Funny story: A year or two ago a podcast producer got in touch wanting to interview me about the UNC scandal, and I had to re-read Discredited to remember what happened. My review: Not bad!
Since then I’ve kept up the writing, albeit in smaller form. I keep a kind of digital diary, which involves quite a bit of writing. I write a weekly fantasy baseball email for the eight-team league I’m the commissioner of. I write Letterboxd reviews when the spirit moves me. And I do plenty of writing — credited and uncredited — for work, which I enjoy.
But I’ve missed writing this newsletter, so I’m going to begin again. The engine I plan to use to inspire new editions is my most recent creative project: a word game called Doppel. It’s like that guess-the-phrase game on Wheel of Fortune, but with a twist. Take it for a spin.
Coming up with the pairings and the clues is a particularly satisfying tiny writing challenge. Maybe that’s why I’ve gotten so into this whole process. Expect newsletters not so much about puzzle creation (there’s not much to say, although I will probably get into it at some point), but jumping off the content of the pairings in random directions.
That’s what this will be for a while. I expect I’ll want to write another book someday, at which point I’ll talk about that again here, but for now this is what you’re going to get. Don’t hesitate to unsubscribe if you’re not interested. For those that remain, I’m excited to be in touch with you again!
